Celebrating our Roots with Sedano’s Supermarket for Hispanic Heritage

  • This post is sponsored by Sedano’s. The opinions and text are all mine.

It is no surprise that when I think back on my childhood, I remember very vividly my trips to Sedano’s with my grandparents who lived in Hialeah, FL. Making sure to keep our culture alive and well, on the drive there we would listen to Cuban music and of course the latest news of what was happening on the island. My grandfather missed his home terribly and would recount stories to us of how beautiful and clear the beaches were, his life growing up, the vibrant nightlife in Havana, the architecture of the buildings and how unfortunately all that had changed - his stories were endless.

My grandmother, on the other hand, was the cook - picadillo, frijoles negros, arroz, platanos maduros, carne con papa, ropa vieja - the list goes on and on. My grandmother shared her recipes that were later passed down, but a simple bocadito one was one of my favorites. I remember eating these right after school or a day by the pool. My mom made this all the time and would leave the extra in the refrigerator for the following day, if it even lasted until then.

For those that may not know, bocaditos or "little bites", are Cuban finger sandwiches that are a staple party food for all types of gatherings. I’ve made them for family picnics, eaten them as an afterschool snack, birthday parties and more. Although I’m sharing my favorite bocadito recipe here are other Cuban classics: Pasta de Pollo y Espárragos (Chicken & Asparagus Spread) and Elena Ruz (Turkey & Jam).

See below for the ingredients and recipe.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

This year we’ll be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by making bocaditos and other family favorite dishes with the help of Sedano’s. I love seeing my nieces help around the kitchen and dance to a variety of Cuban music while helping us in the kitchen. The giggles, smiles and desire to learn their family’s roots is so magical.

I hope you enjoy my bocadito recipe as much as my family does and remember to visit Sedano's Supermarket. Your cafecito is waiting!
